This vinyl edition and digital release pairs 22 of Cologne percussionist Marcus Rieck's drum kit pieces with four percussion works by Pittsburgh musician David Bernabo.

Rieck's pieces are built on patterns and grooves that grew out of a goal to create something every day. The pieces are heady, polyrhythmic, and serpentine — often, each limb navigates it's own course — but the music, taken as a whole, is inviting and hypnotic. Each vinyl copy includes a reproduction of one of Rieck's pencil transcriptions. Each purchase, digital or vinyl, includes a PDF of all 22 pieces.

Bernabo's four works use the studio to replicate a small percussion ensemble. Pitched percussion, deconstructed drum kits, and motors weave in and out of chaotic and unreliable rhythms, sometimes leaning into melody, sometimes leaning into drone.

Actually, I still don't know how to say anything about this record. It's one of the most challenging listens I've had. David Menestres doesn't give you anything for free, but when you dive into that endless ocean of sonic mercury, it kicks as hell. jiristepan
